The First Year: 10 Things I've Learned
By Tasha A. Harris, Editor-in-Chief
|
1. Patience. Launching
and running STAGE TIME
has taught me patience.
There's nothing instant
about putting a magazine
together.
2. Stand up is an individual, self-interest driven
business. Comics tend to only look out for
themselves. I am blessed to be part of a
collaborative effort and give something back.
3. Action is character. It’s not what you say that
defines you as a person, but the choices you
make.
4. Comics and club owners beefing with each
other is waste of time. Comic beef doesn't sell
tickets or drinks.
5. Improvise, improvise, and improvise. I don’t
own a computer. I don’t have a pimped out
Web site or a lot of things required for a start
up, but by hook or crook, I’m dedicated to
crankin’ this thing out and to create a resource
that educates and empowers comedians.

6. Always say thank you and let people know
how much you appreciate them. I’m very
grateful to my family, the writers and the
people who support STAGE TIME. They make
my job easier.
7. Bombing does not mean failure. I bombed
last fall at a show I produced. I was not
prepared. I had two choices: bail out or go
onstage and fall flat on my face. I chose the
latter. I stunk and I have no regrets. Hence
the saying: “The only failure is not to try.”
8. Comedians are shortsighted...Instead of
hating guys like Dane Cook and Larry the
Cable Guy because they mastered the game,
we should be asking, “How did they do it?”
9. Some comedians are still holding onto the
‘80s comic dream. We live in a new age
(Information Age) where You Tube has
replaced the sitcom. We should be creating our
own opportunities instead of waiting to be
“discovered.”
10. Do what you love and fuck the rest. – from
the movie Little Miss Sunshine
